There's a disturbing undertone… Or maybe it's just an excuse to show Cherie Chung sunbathing and doing aerobics? Proving that the male gaze doesn't discriminate, director Angie Chen isn't capable of showcasing much else in this sloppily paced and tonally haphazard sappy-romance-cum-serial-killer-thriller that supposedly belongs to the Hong Kong "new wave" but lacks the fresh, innovative spirit of contemporaries like Ann Hui, Wong Kar-wai, and Patrick Tam; it mostly just splashes and sinks. If there's any reason to see this at all (aside from the aforementioned two scenes), it's to get a better understanding of the kind of material that Tam deftly satirizes in his own Chung vehicle, Cherie, made the same year. love the red (white) herrings if there's a bad version of Rear Window, i haven't seen it.
