The truth is it probably is an interesting story about just how awful life could be in Britain during this time. I just didn't care for any of the stories points that were made. Similar to "Crime and Punishment" it's a series of terrible people doing terrible things trying to just get by at the expense of their fellow human beings. The only kind and noble are the rich and fortunate in the British hierarchy. This film adaptation was made with excellent quality sets, costumes and acting however when the end of this dreadful story comes it seems artificial and lacks relatable context. It's interesting that the director took on this project considering he himself has been a fugitive from the US half of his life for drugging and raping a 13 year old when he himself was 44.
