It is a remake of the 1967 film of the same name. The Devil (Hurley) offers an unhappy young man (Fraser) seven wishes in return for his soul, but twists the spirit of the wishes to frustrate the man's hopes. This movie really isn't one to be taken seriously; The plot is very straightforward and it doesn't try to be very deep in the first place. It's certainly worth a few laughs on the occasion, but even some of the humor may seem a little is a film I would suggest putting on if you are working on a project and are in the need of some background noise. Elizabeth Hurley and Brendan Fraser are this film's saving graces. Hurley is seductive, cunning, and let's just put it out there: she's pretty easy on the eyes. Frasier is his usual goofy self that most of us have come to adore; his opportunities to be deliberate are cut off by the playfulness of the entire storyline in a way that we expect. It is of no doubt that the success 'Bedazzled' has garnished is because of the chemistry and charm these two naturally bring to the big screen - and this alone makes it worth watching at least once if the opportunity presents itself.
At the very least I do appreciate the life lesson offered upon the conclusion, despite it taking longer than some might like to finally get there: If something is meant to be, then it will happen, and forcing it to happen can have pretty dire or unpleasant consequences. In fact, it would probably be the better choice for audiences of the younger generations as the original suffers from the same datedness as many '60s films that were cutting-edge "hip" then, but look all tie-dyed and paisley now. Brendan Fraser does his patented clueless dweeb schtick in place of Dudley Moore's more sad-sackish turn, while Elizabeth Hurley's Devil is more beguiling than Peter Cook's just plain weird Beelzebub. Both sets of characters - old and new - are enjoyable, and both films can be appreciated on their own merits.
