Kuban's writing, deliberately or otherwise, reminds one of male and female novelists of no little talent. On the female side, Kuban combines the fecund economy of Cisneros, the homespun hysteria of Allison and the soulful didacticism of Esquivel. On the male side, Kuban evokes Ford's relationships fraught with ambivalence, McCarthy's violent desolation of both surface and soul and London's denial of any difference between human and animal worlds. Good company? Good book. _Marchlands'_ place (Wyoming) and time (Vietnam) provide a compelling backdrop against which a teen's pregnancy augers a variety of painful deliveries: baby from girl, woman from girl, mother from monster, daughter from father, friend from friend and nation from national disgrace.
A Korean big wave movie to follow Norway's Bølgen/The Wave. To get it out of the way: no, it isn't technically a tidal wave. Tidal waves are caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun, whereas a tsunami is caused by mass water displacement, usually by an earthquake. Also, Haeundae isn't Korean for Tidal Wave. Which is what I thought at first, chalk that up to my ignorance. Haeundae is a beachfront district of the South Korean city of Busan, where the movie is set. In the movie, we meet a lot of the locals of Haeundae. Man-sik, a fisherman who was caught in one of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunamis, losing the father of Yeon-Hee, a young woman who runs a fishing restaurant. Wealthy Seoul tourist Hee-Mi falls for local lifeguard Hyeong-sik, Man-sik's brother. Marine geologist Kim Whi is divorced from his wife, Yoo-jin, and they fight over their daughter. And then it all doesn't matter, because the wave hits. Well, that's not entirely fair. The first two thirds are well acted and fun, and you enjoy the characters and relationships.
