With this one, it leans into its important subject rather than becoming extremely creative, but it's still awesome to see these culturally relevant stories being told. Really well done. This is an ideal film for the March Around the World challenge. The Judge offers a glimpse into a culture I know next to nothing about and showcases a woman doing her best to drive change in what she believes in. The drone shots were neat too! The equivalent of a Family Court. Despite the fact the Qur'an contains nothing prohibiting women from holding such a role centuries of male dominated tradition had to be overcome and it's made clear the Chief Justice who appointed her was subsequently maneuvered out of office.

For me, it is always hard to hear about limitations and condescending things said and done to women. However, nothing provoked a reaction from me as much as when a single woman was being interviewed about how she would feel if she had a husband that took another wife (under Shari'a law, they are allowed up to four). She said something like, "I don't know. I'd probably kill him or poison him. " In the Middle East, I think it would probably be preferable to be single too: if you go to court, chances are you'll get a male judge who will side with the man. Women are truly treated like second-class citizens.

A fascinating look at middle Eastern justice. I was drawn in by the eloquence of the judge, but enraged by the historical chauvinism in society, which is being changed day by day by these two heroic female judges. Worth checking out. Along with RBG another great film about a pioneering woman judge released in the last year or so. An engrossing, funny and moving portrait of a wise and progressive woman and her (important) supportive spouse and family. It's also a vital glimpse into life in Palestine behind the headlines, and an educational perspective on the workings of Shari'a courts. All hail Judge Kholoud Al-Faqih and Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg!
